Frequent Urination

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, is the leading reason men experience bladder issues. As many as half of all men by the age of 60 experience symptoms of BPH, which include trouble starting to urinate, a weak pee stream, and frequent urination at night.

If you have noticed the need to get up and pee at night several times, interrupting your sleep, you are probably experiencing nocturia or nocturnal urinary frequency. A condition where people have to wake up more than once to urinate at night. This is the most common sign that a prostate is getting enlarged enough to interfere with normal urinary functions. If you don’t feel any different or notice other symptoms, it is easy to brush it off without considering more serious underlying issues. It is important that you consult a prostate specialist if nightly urination is becoming a norm.

Frequent Urination And Bladder Pressure

When the prostate starts to grow larger than its actual size, it pushes against the bladder and urethra, the tube through which urine leaves your body, urging you to urinate more frequently than normal.

The constant pressure applied to the bladder from the enlarged prostate gland causes the bladder muscles to weaken. This means that men might feel the need or urge to urinate even though their bladder is not full and therefore the bladder is unable to empty itself completely.

A lot of men can cope with these symptoms but for some, it becomes quite troubling. If you are tired of feeling like you are spending most of your time in the toilet or are going through bladder discomfort and other prostate-related concerns, we suggest consulting with one of our prostate specialists to explore treatment options and see if PAE is right for you.

What Causes Untimely Urination Patterns And Bladder Pressure?

Frequent nightly urination trips to the bathroom can lead to sleepless nights. While having to run to the bathroom to urinate at short intervals during the day or feeling constant pressure on your bladder can disrupt your daily activities. This can be common in both men and women but for different reasons or health conditions such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Drinking too much water before going to bed.
  • Bladder or Urinary Tract Infection.
  • Consuming too much alcohol and caffeine in the evening.
  • Polyuria (your body produces too much pee for your bladder to hold).
  • High blood pressure.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate obstruction.
  • Heart disease or congestive heart failure.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea or other sleep disorders.
  • Pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Childbirth, pregnancy or menopause.
  • Restless legs syndrome.
  • Edema.

Why Your Prostate Is Giving You Trouble?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis right in front of the rectum. The urethra runs through the center of the prostate, from the bladder to the penis, letting urine flow out of the body. When the prostate gland gets enlarged it puts pressure on the bladder making you pee more than usual or at times blocking the urethra altogether. Frequent and uncomfortable urination patterns can lead to other health issues such as:

  • Weak bladder
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney stones

Treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

USA Prostate Centers offers a minimally invasive treatment for BPH called prostatic artery embolization (PAE). This outpatient procedure does not require a hospital stay. PAE involves delivering tiny, microscopic beads through guided imagery into the prostate’s blood vessels. The particles inhibit blood flow to the areas of the prostate most impacted, causing the prostate to shrink, resulting in improved and less frequent urination.
